London promotion stumbles, Charlie Rose summary

  • The planned press conference for O12 in London on Thursday was cancelled following a hotel fire. From the Mirror (if it was so important, why didn't they re-schedule or find another location?)

Movie stars Brad Pitt and Matt Damon fled a London hotel yesterday after a fire started in Gordon Ramsay's restaurant. Comic Jim Carrey and veteran rocker Mick Jagger also hotfooted it when the blaze broke out in the kitchen at Claridge's.

The A-list guests were finally allowed back into the hotel when the alarm went off a second time.

Actors Pitt and Damon and producer Jerry Weintraub were forced to cancel their promotion of Ocean's Twelve, which also stars Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The pair, who arrived on Tuesday, will jet back to the US tomorrow, having wasted their trip.

Weintraub said: "The UK is very important to us all and we are very disappointed to have had to cancel this event."

  • The Bourne Supremacy and Ocean's Twelve both received nominations in the Critics Choice Awards, determined by the Broadcast Critics Association:

The best popular movie nominations included "The Bourne Supremacy," "The Incredibles," "Napoleon Dynamite," "The Passion of the Christ" and "Spider-Man 2."

Best acting ensemble nominees were "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou," "Ocean's Twelve" and "Sideways."

  • Thanks to Natasha for a summary of Matt's appearance on Charlie Rose's show, filmed about two weeks ago.

There was a great vibe between Jerry and Matt, unfortunately Rose kept getting lost or would cut them off. Anyway, the good news is that Matt confirmed this lineup: his next project is The Good Shepherd, followed by The Departed, and then The Informant. Rose commented that if he doesn't get better as an actor after working with these guys, he's basically a lost cause, to which Matt piped up, "yeah, if I don't get better, then I just suck". He was amused, it was meant in jest, but still, a weird thing for the host to say.

Matt did tell a few stories, and none of them had to do with George or Brad or practical jokes. He has such respect for Soderbergh, as was evident in the way he kept turning the discussion back to the director, or to Jerry, or to how difficult it is to make a film, regardless of how much fun the stars look like they're having.

There was also a great moment: Rose asked Matt to comment on the direction of his character in 12, and then lobs a sideways question to Jerry about how Linus has a vulnerability to him. Jerry, without a second thought, says that there's a vulnerability to Matt, in general. To which Matt cries, "whaddya talkin' about?!" and starts laughing. And when Jerry tries to explain further and Rose doesn't understand what he's saying, Matt jumps in with his Weintraub impression, "I luuurve this guy, Damon, he's so vul-lerrrrr-able". It was great.
