Journey to Planet Earth
  • Another article about Journey to Planet Earth, including quotes from Matt, is at the Washington Post:

When it comes to the environment, Matt Damon said, he's not an expert or someone who stands on a soap box and lectures. But the actor does lend his voice to "The State of the Planet's Wildlife," another installment in PBS's ongoing "Journey to Planet Earth" series.

Damon's narration is just one of several ways he enhances the show, said Hal Weiner, who with his wife, Marilyn, has written, directed and produced the programs and more than 200 other documentaries.

"Obviously Matt is very, very busy," Weiner said, "but when we spend a day or two and discuss the show, he asks questions. He's a good writer. He has suggestions about how to frame an argument, what's best for his delivery. He doesn't just walk in and read the script."

And Damon, who is paid millions for acting in films, has donated his time for the series. "I certainly couldn't afford him," Weiner said.

When it comes to the larger issues of the environment, Damon is sympathetic.

"It's easy to get completely wrapped up in our own lives, dreams and struggles," he said. "But what happens for a lot of people is that they eventually look beyond themselves. They look for ways to make changes in their own lives... There are little things, but they have an aggregate effect."

Can you tell me what the critics said about Matt's performance in the play that he did in London?

Look through the archives of The Matt Damon Column: http://mattdamon.cjb.net/

The play, This Is Our Youth by Kenneth Lonergan, opened in April 2002: http://www.fortunecity.com/lavendar/fullmonty/282/4-02.html

There's also various discussions, news items and reviews in June 2004 (May 2004 appears to be missing):

Was that you who used to maintain that site? Why did you close it? In that site I have seen many of lucy's daughter's pictures posted. But you dont post her pictures now. Why?

A friend used to run that site (and I provided most of the updates), before I took it over in early 2003. It just became too cumbersome to update in that format, so I switched to livejournal, which is much simpler and allows feedback (if people are civilised and play by the rules).

I only posted photos of Lucy's daughter (I think) following the 'family day out' in Rome, because the pictures were very widely distributed (and continue to be published). I don't think I posted any photos of her after that date.

As Matt said at one point, (Lucy's daughter) "didn't sign up for this", and it is unfair to include her in any coverage of Matt. She's part of the family, but is a minor child and outside the sphere of any newsworthy information about Matt. She should be protected from all media, including this site.

I really love the way you run this site. I aprreciate your reason behind not posting her photo. Keep up the good work.

BTW are you Felicity in that column? Her way of posting the news is so much like yours. There is this another person called "dusklight" on IMDB board who sounds so much like you.

Matt never talks about his step-father. Does he have good relation with him? What is his name?

There's some dispute about this - I'm not sure if his mother has ever re-married.

His mother had a long-term partner while Matt was growing up, Jay Jones. It was with Jay that his mother bought the broken-down house in Central Square with five other families to renovate, and Jay acted as a kind of step-father to Matt and Kyle. It's the relationship with Jay that Matt has said he wants to emulate with Lucy's daughter - a father figure who does not replace her own (still present and active) father. Jay also has a cameo in Good Will Hunting in a chess scene with Matt's father.

I understand the relationship between Nancy and Jay broke up after many years, and Nancy has since become involved with Douglas Kline, although I am not sure if they are married. It is Doug who works at the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, a cause that Matt has supported through attending benefit premieres for his movies in Boston. Matt has never really talked about him.

Thanks for the info. But I dont remember where, must be a charity event that he attended with his mother and said "My Mom's husband is related to this cause............." (something like that).

You're referring to the Boston charity event that I mentioned above (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War). But I only remember Matt saying his mother's partner worked for the cause. It's only semantics.

I saw a picture of him with his mother attending that event with a caption below which says "My Mom's husband......".
